Dog Veterinarian in Nanaimo & Vancouver Island – Keep Their Tails Wagging
Dogs are our best friends, and bring so much joy and fullness to our lives. The Mahalo Veterinary Hospital team in Nanaimo provides animal hospital care to your dog or puppy. We offer a range of services including medical, diagnostic, surgical, and preventative health care needs that help them live a healthy and happy life.
Some procedures we provide for our dog patients include:
- Vaccinations
Vaccines stimulate your dog’s immune system to form disease fighting cells and antibodies to protect against particular diseases. All dogs should be vaccinated against diseases that are widespread, cause serious illness, and/or are highly contagious. These are termed “core” vaccines. Core vaccines can treat diseases such as Canine Distemper, Canine Parvovirus, Canine Parainfluenza virus, and Rabies. We may recommend other vaccines based on the risk a particular disease poses to an individual dog, “non-core” vaccines. Non-core vaccines can treat infections and bacteria such as Bordetellosis, and Leptospirosis.
- Flea, TICK, AND PARASITE CONTROL
- Flea treatment should be done regularly to prevent home infestations. Just a few adult fleas can lay hundreds of eggs a day. Mahalo provides a full range of pet flea control options so that we can make sure your pup gets the treatment that is right for them, not just a generic “one bootie fits all paws” treatment.
- Female dogs undergo spaying which is the removal of the ovaries and uterus. Estrus (known as “heat”) is eliminated and female dogs will no longer experience the “heat” cycle. This surgery also reduces the chance of ovarian cysts, breast tumours, and uterine infections as your female dog ages. Male dogs may display significantly less aggression and territorial behaviours such as urine marking. They will also have a decreased chance of developing perineal hernias and certain types of cancer later in life. Having your dog spayed or neutered not only benefits your companion and household but will also have a positive impact on the community as it reduces the incidence of unexpected puppies.
No matter the age, size or breed of your dog, we work with and love them all! Maintain your best friend’s health by bringing them in for regular exams and vaccinations. Protect your dog against problems before they start.
